PREVIEW: Neila vs Herrera rolls on to Cremona as WorldWCR heads to Italy for Round 2
Fresh from their Assen victories, Beatriz Neila and Maria Herrera will go head-to-head once again… but will more names be in the mix at Cremona?
The FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship heads to the circuit where the Official Test took place at the start of April, and where the Championship’s first combined track action occurred back in 2024. The Cremona Circuit hosts Round 2 of the 2025 season and the top two in the standings go into the Acerbis Italian Round tied on points, with Beatriz Neila (Ampito Crescent Yamaha) level with Maria Herrera (Klint Forward Racing Team) after their two epic duels last time out at Assen.
THE FIGHT AT THE FRONT: Neila vs Herrera again or more names to join the party?
After Neila added her name to the list of riders who have won in WorldWCR last time out, she heads to Cremona looking to keep the momentum going, though she didn’t stand on the rostrum here last year. Herrera did, however, with victory in Race 1 while she battled for the win in Race 2, although she collided with Sara Sanchez (Terra & Vita GRT Yamaha WorldWCR Team) on the penultimate lap. Sanchez was on the podium in Race 1 last season, while the collision with Herrera allowed Roberta Ponziani (Klint Forward Racing Team) and Tayla Relph (Full Throttle Racing) to claim podiums last year, so expect them to be close to the front group once again.
ROOKIES IMPRESS SO FAR: Lewis and Jones towards the front
Avalon Lewis (Carl Cox Motorsports) and Chloe Jones (GR Motosport) head to Cremona as standout rookies so far this season, with New Zealander Lewis in the mix for a podium at Assen until a late-race crash ended her hopes of a maiden rostrum. She was P4 in Race 1 in the Netherlands and made her WorldWCR debut as a wildcard at Cremona last year, claiming a best of fifth. Chloe Jones (GR Motosport) was similarly impressive at Assen, taking P6 and P7, but she’ll be racing at Cremona for the first time – her WorldWCR debut as a wildcard came at Jerez in 2024. Beatrice Barbera (Team GP3 AD11) heads into her home round looking to impress, having missed out on points at Assen.
LOOKING TO REPEAT TOP-TENS FROM 2024: several riders looking for more
Mallory Dobbs (Diva Racing) finished further down the order than she would’ve liked at Assen, but heads to a circuit where she claimed P10 at last year, giving her confidence she can repeat that this year. Astrid Madrigal (Pons Italika Racing FIMLA) was P8 twice at the season-opener and claimed two top tens at Cremona last season, while Pakita Ruiz (PR46+1 Racing Team), Emily Bondi (ZELOS Trasimeno), Ornella Ongaro (Ornella Ongaro Racing Team) and Lucy Michel (TSL-Racing) all took finishes inside the top ten last year. Can they repeat that this season?
A NEW NAME ON THE GRID: wildcard debut for a home hero
There will be a new face on the WorldWCR grid as Denise Dal Zotto (Affinity Sports Academy Rokit Rookies) makes her WorldWCR debut on home soil. The Italian raced recently in the British Junior Supersport championship before switching to the 2024 Women’s Italian CIV championship and Women’s European championship.
CREMONA TEST RECAP: Neila, Herrera share the spoils
The Cremona Test perhaps gave an indication of the season to come, with Neila topping the timesheets on Day 1 and Herrera on Day 2. Home hero Ponziani was quick on both days, finishing third and second, while Jessica Howden (Team Trasimeno) claimed fifth on the second and final day of running in Italy – so could she spring a surprise at the weekend?
